Paris Culture & Customs

There's this idea that Parisians stick up their noses to Americans — that they're notoriously unfriendly and even rude. However, a littlesavoir-faire, or diplomacy, helps. So, try to speak the language, if only a kindly bonjour (hello or good day) or bonsoir (good evening). If you're at a loss for words, politely ask the waiter or shop attendantpouvez-vous m'aider? (can you help me?) or parlez-vous anglais (do you speak English?). Another helpful phrase: Excusez-moi (pardon me or excuse me). Try to blend into the refined sophistication of Parisian life rather than stick out as a loud, garish or uncouth visitor.

Speaking of trying to blend in … Paris is one of the most fashionable cities in the world. Leave the fanny packs at home. After all, everyone from Marie Antoinette and Coco Chanel to Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Lacroix got their start in haute-couture fashion in Paris — and their influence remains. Blend in with the locals by dressing stylishly and taking pride in what you choose to wear. But take note, certain items of clothing such as shorts and sneakers are frowned upon, especially in restaurants and night clubs.

France uses the euro, and major credit cards are accepted at most establishments in Paris. Since the euro to U.S. dollar exchange rate fluctuates, be sure to check what the current exchange rate is before you go. Keep in mind the exchange rate when you tip and make purchases. Some smaller bakeries or bistros may only take cash, though, so research ahead of time. Most restaurants and cafes will include a 10 to 15 percent service charge (service compris) on the bill. You can leave some additional change for exceptional service, if you wish. Taxi drivers tend to expect a 5 to 10 percent tip, though usually rounding to the nearest euro or two will often suffice. You may also encounter fees to use the bathroom in some restaurants and bathroom attendants in many bars in Paris. If the fee isn't collected ahead of the use of the facilities, it's polite to leave 50 cents to a euro for the attendants.

Paris Dining

Similar to many other international cities, Paris offers a surplus of restaurants that serve up everything from Asian fusion dishes to nouveaux bistro fare. And because France invented a widely adopted style of cooking, the food in Paris is très bien. Look for upscale establishments in the 1er arrondissement (1st district) and in Marais, as well as around Champs-Elysées and the Eiffel Tower. The 2ème arrondissement has a number of cheap eateries and cafes, as does Montmartre.

No matter where you choose to dine, you should sample some French staples like soupe à l'oignon gratinée (French onion soup), croque-monsieur (a grilled cheese and ham sandwich smothered in more melted cheese), steak frites (steak and french fries) and coquilles St-Jacques (seasoned scallops topped with cheese and bread curmbs served in a shell). Those with a sweet tooth should save room to try some of the following French desserts: macarons, pain au chocolat(chocolate croissants), puits d'amours (large puff pastries filled with vanilla cream and drizzled with caramel sauce) or crêpes (fixins' range from Nutella to bananas and berries).

For a meal on the go, pick up a baguette sandwich at a traiteurs or grab a quick savory crêpe at a crêperie or crepe stand. Chocolat chaud (hot chocolate), café crème (coffee with cream) and other drinks can be enjoyed at any of the city's many cafes. And if you want to save some euros, head to the local grocer and pick up some snacks for the day. Cheaper bistros and brasseries abound, but for some French fine-dining, splurge at Guy Savoy, Bistrot Paul Bert orChez Andre, among other pricey yet delicious dining establishments.

Famed foodie Julia Child wrote "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" — rather than something Rachel Ray-esque like "30 Minute French Meals" — because French meal preparation is an art. Even the art of perfecting French specialties (wine, cheese, pastry) are a reflection of the time and care put into a meal. Likewise, linger over your French fine-dining experience, realizing that the food is meant to be savored rather than gulped. And remember, elbows off the table!

It boasts many of the country’s most exciting chefs and has a lively fashion and design community that creates innovative architecture, clothing and graphics.

And as if that wasn’t incentive enough to visit, LA is the perfect city to intersperse relaxing escapes into nature with metropolitan pleasures. The city has many beautiful semi-wild parks (among them Runyon Canyon, Will Rogers State Park and Griffith Park) and there is also the 22-mile long South Bay bike path that runs from Will Rogers State Beach in the north to Playa Del Rey in the south.

And half a day’s drive from the city you can experience great skiing at Big Bear, the vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley near Santa Barbara or hike in the High Mojave desert near Palm Springs.

While LA can be intimidating to the novice to navigate (at its widest it is 44 miles across) and its 10 and 12 lane highways look terrifying to the beginner, once you get the hang of the fairly slow moving freeways, it is easy to cross great distances in a little time.

When to go

LA is a great year round destination.  Summer temperature is typically in the 80s and winter highs are in the 60s and low 70s. January and February are the rainiest months, so bring protection and winter temperatures can plunge dramatically in the evening, but who cares when you get to spend most of the day in a T-shirt?  Year round temperatures are typically a few degrees cooler at the beach and from May-June it can take most of the morning for the grey ‘marine layer’ to burn off.

Getting there

Flights: British Airways (0844 493 0787; britishairways.com), Virgin Atlantic (0844 209 7777; virgin-atlantic.com), Continental Airlines (0845 607 6760; continental.com), American Airlines (0844 499 7300;aa.com) and United (0845 8444 777; united.com) all fly direct to Los Angeles from the UK. Flight time is around 11.5 hours outbound and 10.5 hours inbound when returning to the UK.

Transfers: Arriving at Los Angeles International Airport LAX (lawa.org), most people opt to rent a car for the duration of their stay.

A taxi from LA to Santa Monica costs $35 and takes roughly 20 minutes depending on traffic. From LAX to Hollywood costs $50 and takes roughly 45 minutes.  A cheaper option is the Super Shuttle (001 310 782 6600; supershuttle.com) a shared ride that cost $16 per person to Santa Monica and $17 to Hollywood and would likely take 60-120 minutes (due to the number of drop offs). 

A great budget option is using the LA Metro Trip Planner (001 323 466 3876; socaltransport.org) to find out which bus and/or metro combination gets you closest to your destination.  A recent search for a ride from LAX to the posh Shutters on the Beach hotel in Santa Monica found a bus trip that cost just $1, took 45 minutes and dropped you 4 blocks away.

Getting around

Buses and trains: Few people think of taking the bus or subway in LA, but you may be surprised how speedy and convenient it can be in some locations.  Use the excellent LA Metro Trip Planner (see above) to find out which bus and/or metro combination gets you closest to your destination.

Cycling: For a city dominated by cars, Los Angeles has a surprising number of separate bike trails (labikepaths.com) and over 140 miles of bike lanes and 4,000 bike racks.   The Santa Monica and Venice beach promenade is dotted with bike rental and skate rental huts.  One of the most popular bike stores is Spokes N Stuff ( 001 888 242 3971; spokes-n-stuff.com/location_rental.html), which rents out bikes in Santa Monica, Griffith Park and Marina Del Ray from $14.99 all day.

Taxis:  Yellow Cab Co (001 877 733 3305; layellowcab.com) and LA Checker Cab (001 310 330 3720; ineedtaxi.com) are two of LA’s most reputable taxi companies.

Car hire:  LAX has nearly 40 rental car companies, but only 10 have courtesy shuttles that drop off passengers at the terminals, these are Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National, Payless and Thrifty.  You can also rent cars by the hour or day from Zipcars (zipcar.com/la) this is a convenient option if you are staying in Hollywood where most of the Zip car pick up and drop off locations are situated.

Local laws and etiquette:

Always have your passport and driver’s license with you when driving in the US, in case you get stopped by police.

You can turn right at a red traffic light (provided you come to a complete stop first, there is no oncoming traffic and no contradictory sign saying “no turn on red”).

In most American cities, you have to park with your car pointing in the direction of the traffic on the correct side of the road, otherwise you will be fined.

Also, avoid parking within 15ft of a fire hydrant.

Half a day’s drive from the city you can experience great ski-ing at Big Bear, vineyards near Santa Barbara or hike in the desert near Palm Springs.

Thông thường, các hãng máy bay giá rẻ sẽ hạ cánh ở sân bay Don Muang. Nhưng nếu bạn có lịch trình đến một nơi khác hoặc vào khu trung tâm thì việc sử dụng xe buýt trung chuyển để đến sân bay Suvarnabhumi là một lựa chọn tối ưu.

Lễ hội âm nhạc

Khoảng sân lớn trước cửa trung tâm thương mại Siam hay khu vực Central World khá rộng lớn nên thường xuyên tổ chức các bữa biểu diễn âm nhạc hoàn toàn miễn phí. Nếu bạn muốn thưởng thức không khí sôi động hãy nhớ đến đây vào mỗi tối ở Bangkok.

Xem đấu võ – múa

Muay Thái được xem là môn võ cổ truyền hay một nét văn hóa riêng biệt. Vào lúc 6 giờ chiều mỗi thứ tư hằng tuần tại MBK Shopping Mall, chương trình Fight Night diễn ra ở phía bên ngoài trung tâm thương mại sẽ thu hút hằng trăm võ sĩ từ khắp nơi trên thế giới đến đây tỉ thí, hẳn sẽ giúp bạn mãn nhãn.

Tại góc giao lộ Ploenchit và Ratchadamri Road (gần trạm BTS Chitlom Station), có ngôi đền Erawan Shrine thờ một vị thần Hindu – Brahma rất linh thiêng, thu hút hàng ngàn du khách ghé thăm mỗi ngày. Nơi đây thường diễn ra các hoạt động múa hát vào những ngày lễ nên ghé đúng dịp bạn có thể xem miễn phí.

Cơm chay tại chùa

Không khó để vào chùa xin thưởng thức một bữa cơm chay, vì vậy khi có điều kiện bạn cũng nên thử qua. Nếu lanh lẹ bạn còn có thể xin phụ việc các nhà sư, để tìm hiểu thêm về quan niệm Phật giáo ở đất nước Thái Lan.

Cung điện Vinanmek

Đây là một dinh thự hoàng gia được làm bằng gỗ tếch, chịu ảnh hưởng phong cách kiến trúc cung điện Châu âu và được bao quanh bởi các bảo tàng, khu vườn và kênh đào. Cung điện được xây dựng vào năm 1900 dưới lệnh vua Rama V. Du khách sẽ được miễn phí vé vào cửa Cung điện Vinanmek khi xuất trình vé tham quan Hoàng cung (Grand Palace) trong vòng 1 tuần.

Tàu hỏa miễn phí

Ở một số vùng quê nghèo, vua Thái Lan đã bố trí một số tuyến đường sắt miễn phí cho dân nghèo. Nếu muốn trải nghiệm, bạn cũng có thể thử nhưng lưu ý nhỏ là chuyến tàu này thường rất đông. Do đó, khi sức khỏe không được tốt thì hãy mua vé đi chuyến khác.

Du lịch Sapa du khách sẽ có cơ hội chinh phục đỉnh Phan Xi Păng nổi tiếng là thực hiện một chuyến du lịch bụi đến những bản làng ẩn hiện trong sương. Khung cảnh núi rừng với trăm hoa đua nở, “mây ôm ấp núi, núi ôm mây” chắc chắn sẽ làm nức lòng du khách khi đã đặt chân đến nơi này.

Khí hậu

Sa Pa có thứ tài nguyên vô giá đó là khí hậu trong lành mát mẻ, mang nhiều sắc thái đa dạng. Nằm ở độ cao trung bình 1.500m – 1.800m, khí hậu Sapa ít nhiều mang sắc thái xứ ôn đới, với nhiệt độ trung bình 15-18°C. Từ tháng 5 đến tháng 8, Sapa có mưa nhiều. Cuối năm, khi mùa đông đến, nhiệt độ ở Sa Pa có thể xuống dưới 0 độ, đôi khi có tuyết rơi.

Du lịch Sapa mùa nào đẹp nhất?

- Thời điểm thích hợp để đi du lịch Sapa là từ tháng 9 đến tháng 11 hoặc từ tháng 3 đến 5. Thời điểm này thời tiết Sapa ổn định, ngày nắng khô, đêm lạnh.

- Tháng 4 – 5, là thời điểm đồng bào dân tộc thiểu số cấy lúa trên những thửa ruộng bậc thang. Và đây cũng là mùa nở của rất nhiều loài hoa đẹp. Cảnh cấy lúa rất đẹp, cánh thợ săn ảnh thích đi vào mùa này và mùa lúa chín.

- Tháng 9 – 10 là mùa lúa chín, khi ấy thì khắp mọi góc nhìn Sapa đều rực vàng. Vào khoảng thời gian này, Sapa như khoác lên mình màu áo mới – màu vàng óng trên khắp những quả đồi. Nhưng bạn nên đi vào giữa hoặc cuối tháng 9, sang tháng 10 nhiều nơi đã gặt xong.

Tháng 12 đến tháng 2 trời rất lạnh, có thể xuất hiện băng và thỉnh thoảng có tuyết rơi. Đây cũng là mùa nở của hoa đào. Thời điểm này được rất đôi bạn trẻ chọn để đi du lịch tại Sapa, để một lần được thấy tuyết rơi ngay trên quê hương Việt Nam.
